Blacks are cursed?
A Black Parent reader recently sent an e-mail statiing that her husband believes that black people are cursed. According to her, her husband who is black, says that God cursed blacks by giving them the worst of everything, including coarse hair, like the reader and her child have.
“My husband is part Native American so his features, even his hair is not 100% black,” she says.
Part of her husband’s “blacks are cursed” reasoning is because he believes blacks are lazy and God doesn’t like those who don’t care for themselves. She says that he talks about these views near their daughter and she is afraid their daughter will develop self-image issues like those covered in our March/April issue.
My views about those who spew hateful remarks, whether black or not, run the gamut. I often find that ignorance has a lot to do with their hate, but other things, including upbriging, play a role.
In this particular case, I think the husband probably hates himself and uses hateful, totally encompassing, views to make himself feel better. I’m no therapist but I have learned that those who put others down tend to do it as a way to make themselves feel better.

Why are you married to an idiot who thinks you are cursed because of your hair and features? Moreover- why did you procreate with him? You may need to work out some self hate issues because only someone who doesn’t love themselves would bond themselves to someone who obviously hates and has no respect for them. What are black features and black hair? My hair is not tightly curled- and my grandma’s is naturally blonde and straight. Yet we are both Black. No one black person in the US is “pure” ethnographically or from any other perspective due to the lasting effects of slavery so any and all features/ complexcions/ hair types etc. may show up on black babies. You and your man need counseling- him definitely as he hates part of himself and you because of the same reason. Please fix yourself before you end up inculcating and passing on the legacy of self hatered onto your innocent child.

Many people who don’t admit it may feel as your husband. Just look at the present state of Blacks in the world and the continuous over publicizing of everything negative that Blacks do and/or say. if one has nothing to offset this negativity, self-hatred is almost a certain result. In addition, it was the church who actually proclaimed and taught (religiously) that Blacks were (are) the cursed children of Ham. So, again it is not farfetched for many Blacks to believe as your husband. Countering the mentacide that perpetuated by White society and their systems and instituitons is a life-long process. Begin by reveiwing some history of Blacks in America who have overcome the challanges we’ve faced in the past. Ultimately, we must look at our present state in view of the totallity of human history, especially Black history (which is the history of civilized men and women). After viewing a very disappointing display of Black life with my kids, I had to graphically (at the dining room table) give my children a lesson in geo-historical power and advantage. The length of my dining room table measured 5000 years. The half-way point was 2500 years ago. Half of the half was 1250 years ago, Half of the 1/4 was 650 years ago and 1/3 of the remaing 1/8 of the length of my dining room table represented the last 500 years. This coincidently represented the decline of African empowerment and the concommitant rise of European power. Prior to that time Africa (Blacks) were independent and empowred in various degrees around the wourld. The last 50 years have seen tremendous strides in recognizing from where we’ve fallen and to where we can go. Your mate must look at Black life from this perspective and seek out examples throughout our long history to emulate to bring about the reclamation of power and peace for Blacks throughout the world. Good luck.
