Parents and the PFLAG community have known this for years: when you love and affirm your child for who they are, they do better.
Based on data, we know #LGBTQ+ youth with affirming families are more likely to thrive.
What are some things we can say to empower our children to thrive?
✨ “Thank you for telling me you’d prefer to wear that outfit today. I’m so proud to be your parent!”
✨ “What would you like to do with your hair today? It’s your hair, so you get to pick—and I’m here to help!”
✨ “It’s fun to play house! And you and your friends get to decide what your family looks like when you play.”
We also know that data shows that #nonbinary youth who say most people in their lives use their affirmed pronouns are more likely to feel loved, valued, and affirmed. This also increasingly helps avoid negative outcomes.
What are some things we can say to affirm, value, and love our children no matter how they identify?
✨“Thank you for telling me that today you don’t feel like a boy or a girl. Is there another name I should use that would make you feel good?”
✨ “Thanks for telling me that your pronouns are ‘they’ and ‘them.’ I love you so much and I’m so glad you told me.”
